A Lifetime of Change: Reflecting on My Journey
Introduction
I was born in 1953, I have witnessed an extraordinary transformation in the world—culturally, technologically, and personally. From my childhood days in Southern California, to raising a family with my wife, Jon Ellen, and settling into our lives in Winston-Salem, each stage of life has reflected growth, adaptability, and unwavering values. Along the way, the cost of living and societal norms have evolved dramatically, shaping both challenges and opportunities.
From California to West Virginia: A Defining Childhood
In 1962, at the age of 9, my family made a life-changing move from Southern California to Southern West Virginia. The cultural shift was dramatic—trading the fast pace of the West Coast for the traditions of Appalachia. My younger siblings and I adapted quickly, but for my oldest sister, who was in high school, the transition was more difficult. This move taught me the importance of resilience and the role of family in navigating change.
During this time, the cost of living reflected the simplicity of life in the post-war era:
• Average home price: $9,500
• Gallon of gas: $0.29
• Loaf of bread: $0.16
• Movie ticket: $0.70
Marriage and Building a Family
In 1979, I married Jon Ellen, a native of Southern West Virginia. Together, we began building a life rooted in faith, family, and love. We welcomed our daughter, Traci, in 1981, and our son, Travis, in 1985. These years brought joy, growth, and the challenges of raising a family in a rapidly changing world.
The late 1970s and early 1980s also reflected an era of inflation and shifting economic conditions:
1979 Prices:
• Average home price: $58,100
• Gallon of gas: $0.86
• Loaf of bread: $0.41
1985 Prices:
• Average home price: $89,330
• Gallon of gas: $1.20
• Loaf of bread: $0.74
These were formative years for me as I cbalanced career opportunities with the joys and responsibilities of parenthood
Career Moves and Finding a Home in Winston-Salem
In the late 1980s, we moved to Bluefield, VA, where I continued to grow my career. After a few years, I sold my company. The purchasing company retained me, eventually inviting me to join their senior leadership team at their corporate headquarters in Winston-Salem, NC.
When we moved, we settled in Clemmons, a charming bedroom community of Winston-Salem. Clemmons became home for decades as we raised our family and built connections. As life transitioned, Jon Ellen and I eventually downsized to a townhouse in Winston-Salem, embracing simplicity and the next stage of life.
The cost of living in the 1990s and early 2000s reflected these transitions:
• 1990 Prices:
• Average home price: $122,900
• Gallon of gas: $1.34
• Loaf of bread: $0.70
• 2000 Prices:
• Average home price: $165,300
• Gallon of gas: $1.51
• Loaf of bread: $1.99
A Look at Today: 2024
Now, in 2024, the world is vastly different from when I was a child. Advances in technology, shifts in culture, and rising costs define the current landscape. Life today is more connected, but it also brings challenges of complexity and pace.
• 2024 Prices:
• Average home price: $436,800
• Gallon of gas: $3.50–$5.00
• Loaf of bread: $3.50
Although prices have soared, the conveniences and advancements we enjoy today, from electric cars to artificial intelligence, were unimaginable in my youth.
Reflections on a Lifetime of Change
Every move and decision in my life has taught me lessons that shaped who I am today. From Southern California to Southern West Virginia, from Bluefield to Winston-Salem, the journey has been one of faith, family, and perseverance.
The costs of living over the decades remind me of the incredible transformations I’ve witnessed, but it’s the timeless values of love, faith, and family that remain my foundation. These values have guided me through every chapter of my life, and I am grateful to share them with my children and grandchildren.
As I reflect on this journey, I am filled with gratitude for the lessons learned and the blessings received. While the world may change, the most important things—faith, love, and family—remain constant, anchoring me through every stage of life.
Thank you for joining me on this journey through the decades. If you’re reflecting on your own lifetime or planning for the future, I’d love to hear your story!
